VOLUNTEERING
Not gonna lie, it takes a certain amount of personal courage and committment to volunteer in a humanitarian or other crises of any kind - from building schools, to working in refugee camps, saving animals from extinction or helping the homeless.
Sometimes it's enough to need to bear witness, sometimes the need to make a difference is what motivates. But it is never going to be a five-star hotel kind of experience. If you're prepared to accept a little less in the creature comforts department, carry some grief for those less fortunate, but reap the tremendous personal fulfullment that comes with making lives just that little bit easier, volunteering can be one of the most rewarding jobs you will ever, ever do.
It's pretty much a given that there will be tears, there will be hardship, confusion, anger, frustration - in fact the whole spectrum of possible human emotion is involved. But that ONE smile from a traumatised child, ONE saved baby turtle, or the first squirt of clean water from a new well is a truly life-altering experience!
Whether you want to volunteer in your community or across the globe, in this section you will find opportunities about what you can do to change the world from others who have - one small step at a time.
COMMUNITIES
From your local to the global community, there are places, people, companies, charities and initiatives that you can get involved in to help raise awareness, take an active part in, even if you're more comfortable helping from the sidelines. In this section you'll find associations and ways in which you, whether an individual, a group of girl guides, a church group, a WI branch or a team of single dads can stand in solidarity with others who are facing issues of poverty, discrimination, lack of sanitation, human rights abuses, access to education, homelessness - the list goes on and on..
Every conceivable inequity or societal failing exists somewhere in the world, with serious repercussions for humanity, the planet and life as we know it - and we never know when, or by whom, a single act or word will tip the balance in favour of our world as a whole. So pick something you're passionate about, or something that ticks you off, maybe something you'd like your kids to learn, or something to honour your mother. Be inventive - Get involved!
EDUCATORS
A holisitc awareness of issues facing our world today are vital in the educations of tomorrow's leaders - the children and young adults of any society. Whether it's learning about sustainability, growing food, mindfulness, politics, economics, other cultures, social justice, art, geopolitical events, multi-faiths, homelessness, banking, environmental problems, a global education really matters, especially in today's world.
This section will assist educators in making informed decisions about how they can integrate global awareness into already existing curricula and find creative ways for children of all ages to grow, to be their best selves, to make wise choices and be creative in helping to solve some of our hurting world's issues.
